The Fence

"Go and play"

Children should be seen not heard
That was always the case.
As mams leaned on the gate
Nattering friends, face to face.

Trying to eavesdrop
To hear a naughty word?
Being told “go play!”
But trying so hard to hear what they say!

“Mrs So-and-So was out late one night
Her husband home early from afternoons
She didn’t expect it!”
“She had a fright!”

“The price of potatoes going up
And bread, how shocking!”
“Got a ladder in my new stocking!”
All this talk meant nothing at all

But trying to listen,
Whilst hiding behind the wall.

Mams shouting,
“Get in, it’s time for a bath!”
They’d say their goodnight all
With a hearty laugh.

Would love to experience again
That bygone time,
When days were more gentle
Hardly a crime.

Nan’s in their ‘pinnys’
Going out? Where’s my hat!
Never untidy, oh no! None of that!

Sunday’s were for rest

Roast dinners for everyone..
No chips on that day!
Tin fruit, bread and butter.
Always for tea

Memories of days gone by...
Forever..... stay with me.

I can't hear the voices

Switch it on.

It goes zoom.
As you whizz around the room.
Bits of fluff
Don’t stand a chance
As you and your hoover have a dance.

Awkward corners?
Ahh! No trouble.
This zooming hoover
Could pick up rubble!

Skirting boards
Attachment for,
Sorts of brushes
For each kind of floor!

Doing the stairs
No need for lead
Whizz up and down all at speed!

Gone are the days
Of beating the mat
Over the washing line
No need for that!

Zooming round.
Zoom! Zoom! Zoom!
As you hoover around the room
At last it’s tidy
A clean dust free floor
Until they all
Tramp through the door!

Sunshine

Sometimes when the sun shines
You need to sit outside.
Enjoy all that is around you
With a drink right at your side.

But sometimes when the sun shines
People seem to think it is ok,
To be rather bloody noisy
And drink away the day!

Now I’m not one to dismiss it
To each their own......it’s fine ๐Ÿคช
So cheers everybody!
I’m on my third big glass of wine Hic!

Favourite Things

A loving Spoon
Do you have a favourite spoon
Or a favoured fork or knife?
Or am I just the weird one
Who needs to get a life?

Do you have a favourite chair
A cushion or a rug?
And do you have to have your tea
In a special cup or mug?

Do you say “you can’t sit there,
That’s my spot on the settee!”
Does anyone else do these things
Or is it just fussy weird me?

But I find all these foibles

Soothing like an airy tune
But woe betides that someone
Who messes with my favourite spoon!

Father's Day

My dad, he was a miner,
Who worked hard all of his life.
He found a special lady
Who he made his wife.

Each day he went down into the earth,
To help dig out tons of coal.
For providing for his family
With life’s pleasures was his goal.

He no longer has to toil so hard,
For he is at peace in heaven above.
And although I miss him very much,
He now has the glory of Gods love. ๐Ÿ’–

Cordell Country

Nantyglo Iron Works
Well here I am with a bit of spare time.
For reasons I don’t even know.
So what do I do with this spare time?
Visit somewhere I’ve always wanted to go?
I find myself in the town of Blaenavon!
A place I see most every day...
But I’ve stopped off to visit this historical town...
So mmmm? What more can I say?
Cordell wrote books about this place
About a family fictional but kind of true
For in the steps of that story you tread
That goes over the mountain homeward bound too!
After wandering around and looking at stuff,
I sit for a biscuit and tea.
And low and behold foreigners at the next table.
Talking a language quite alien to me?
Alas it’s the mother-tongue that I know nothing of..
For it was not taught when in school.
But here they are conversing away
And it leaves me feeling quite the fool!
Our history abounds right around us
We have men and women who a mark made
Forefathers of industry solid and hard
Tracks of steam, iron and coal trucks laid!
It’s all gone now along with the language
Specially in this area of Wales
Our country was ravaged as read in the book
But the land of song somehow prevails?

Friends

School Friends

On the 29th of April
Four friends met up to play.
Although they have their bus-pass?!
It was about being six years old that day!
They acted like their shoe size,
When a bowling they did go.
Laughing loud when throwing
The bowling ball too slow!
After awhile they decided
Enough of that exercise!
So sat down to talk and talk
Where it all came down to size!
Small ear canals!
Then grey hairs!
Thick toe-nails!
Dear me!
But laughter can explode out
With a comment as innocent as can be!
“I’ve got a Google-Mini”
Was all that she had said
Which made the friends laugh out loud
Can you just imagine?
What went on inside their head!
It made the biggest laugh of the day
If fact they laughed out very loud
But these four friends didn’t care
For of this friendship...
They feel very proud!

I miss you every day

Mam

For once I’m silent..
No words to say..
Just that you’re in my heart
And I miss you every day.
Not a day goes by
Without feeling you near
Because the mam I had.....
I hold very dear.
Happy Heavenly Birthday Mam
18th May 1921

Game of Thrones

All things end one day

So it’s at an end
This Game of Thrones
It’s left us battle worn....And forlorn
All eight series done and dusted
With a dragon melting the Iron Throne!
We’ve seen murder and skullduggery
Men of honour who righted wrongs
A women who would slay men dead
To be queen of Seven Kingdoms
White Walkers and The Nights Watch
The Unsullied and The North
Wildlings and Dothraki
Fighting for all their worth
A Dragon Queen, Khaleesi
The Starks and brave Jon Snow
Lannister’s and Baratheon
All at and end, nowhere else to go.
For those who have not watched it
I know you couldn’t give a toss
But for us the loyal viewer
We are all now at a loss.

Cardiff

A drive down to Cardiff
TGI’s had no gas!
Ed’s Easy Diner then
So it was!
Big Bubba Burger
Onion rings and fries.
A cola and some cider
People watching,
Time flies.
A look round the Apple store,
Gadgets galore.
Prices to blow your mind
Walked back out the door!
Then came the time,
To go see the show.
Tickets at the ready
Go, go, go!
Excitement all round
The music starts.
Seeing Giovanni....
Pulsating hearts!
The Strictly Professionals
Dancing, routine
Live music
Enchanting
The best to be seen.

Remember them

Remember Them

D-Day veterans, oh so few.
Respecting their dead,
They gave all for you.
Brave men went forging blindly ahead.
Into a salvo of bullets, falling down dead.
Can you possibly imagine
That feeling as they strode?
Onto a beach in fighting mode?
Instantly dying.
Or worse laying hurt.
Thinking of home as they lay in the dirt!
Crying for their mother
As pain seared through.
Bullets hitting metal.
Can you imagine, can you?
No!
Bravery exalted.
Those men gave their all.
Bow your heads in a prayer
D-Day veterans stand tall!
Our freedom was fought for
By so many a brave man.
Thank You doesn’t cut it
But say it if you can!
Never forget.
Say a prayer.
Be thankful for those...so brave men there.

Suddenly

Speak Now

Don’t leave suddenly
With things left unsaid.
Don’t leave suddenly
With words still inside your head.
For we never know if suddenly
There’s no chance to express those thoughts.
Say whatever it is that’s on your mind
Tick the boxes, don’t leave noughts!
Speak up and speak up truly
Say those words you need to say.
Before it’s all gone, suddenly,
With unspoken words left for....
That “another day.”
